FAS
Rules for 2009
Starting in 2009
the FAS will introduce 2 new experimental engine rules. These will be evaluated
as the season progresses.
1- Any
255cc single cylinder 2 stroke engine
2- Any
510cc single cylinder 4 stroke engine.
Now,
I understand that there will be quite a few questions on "what
weight"..I'll give all of you a short explanation and then type it up in
detail later on..All engine rules as currently stated in the FAS Rules section
will remain the same.. with the exception...If any of the maximum CC's are
exceeded then your base minimum weight will automatically increase to 430lbs and
the weight break goes away with Kart and Driver. This change only pertains
to single cylinder engines not twin engines or twin cylinder engines regardless
of type. All twin cylinder/engine rules will remain the same no exceptions. No
street bike motors will be allowed.
For
example: if someone is running a 210cc single cylinder 2 stroke his weight will
be the standard base of 230+ 1lb per cc or 440lbs...by this rule you will still
be allowed to run at 430lbs not 440lbs. If its a 250cc 2 stroke, you'll still be
at 430lbs up to a maximum of 255cc's...
For
all the 4 cycle engines, the rules again remain the same. You can still have
your weight breaks until you exceed the Maximum allowed by the rules. If you
choose to exceed those maximum cc's then your weight will automatically revert
to the 510cc maximum rule with a base weight of 430lbs. Regardless if its OHV,
OHC or Flathead. I will not make a distinction in how many cams or valves are
allowed. DOHC engines with 4 valves will weigh the same as SOHC with 2 valves at
this time.
As
I stated at the beginning this is experimental at this stage. I will not suggest
an engine type but I can tell you that there is a proliferation of both 2 stroke
and 4 stroke engines of this size that can be had for reasonable prices and have
proven quite reliable..Just depends on you.
All
the rules of 2008 will remain the same in 2009 with the exception noted above!!
1. Engines:
A. Any type two-stroke cycle engine or engines,
no limit to modifications.
B. Any type four-stroke cycle engine or engines, no
limit to modifications.
2. Minimum Weight / Maximum Displacement
A. Rotary valve or Reed valve Two-Stroke Cycle Engine or
Engines, 230 lbs plus one pound for each cc or fraction of a cc.
Multiple engines or cylinders are permissible. 210 cc maximum total
displacement .
B. Flat Head Four-Stroke Cycle Engine or Engines,
190 lbs plus one pound for every 3cc or fraction of a cc. Multiple engines
or cylinders are permissible. 466 cc maximum total displacement.
C. Piston Port, McCulloch or US820 (West Bend)
Two-Stroke Cycle Engine or Engines, 170 pounds plus one pound for every cc or
fraction of a cc. Multiple engines or cylinders are permissible. 225
cc maximum total displacement.
D. Overhead Cam (OHC) Four-Stroke Cycle Engine or
Engines, 245 lbs plus one pound for every 2cc or fraction of a cc. Multiple
engines or cylinders are permissible. 265cc maximum total displacement.
E. Overhead Valve Push Rod (OHV) Four-Stroke Cycle
Engine or Engines, 220 lbs plus one pound for every 2.5 cc or fraction of a cc.
Multiple engines or cylinders are permissible. 446cc maximum total
displacement.
F.
Wankel Rotary engines, 230lbs plus one pound for every 2 cc or fraction of a cc.
Maximum 300cc.
G. Forced Induction and Nitrous Oxide. If a kart is
equipped with some type of supercharger turbocharger, or nitrous oxide system,
add 15 lbs for each cylinder that is served by the system.
H. Mixed Engine Type in Multiple Engine Situations.
The minimum weight for the engine corresponding with the higher weight will be
imposed.
I. Fuel. There are no fuel restrictions except
that no illegal substance or substances may be used as fuel or as a fuel
additive.
J. Driver
must be 18 years of age to compete
K.
Transmissions/Shifters are allowed
3. Calculating Displacement / Declaring Weight.
A. The bore will be measured with dial calipers and the
stroke with a two or three inch travel dial indicator.
B. The following formula will be used for
calculating displacement;
BORE X BORE X STROKE X .7854 X 16.39
= CC of engine.
(this assumes that the bore and
stroke were measured in inches. The 16.39 is a conversion factor
From cubic inches to cubic
centimeters.)
C. Always round up to the nearest whole cc when
calculating minimum weight.
D. Competitors must declare their weight and display it
next to their front number in such a
manner that the scale person can
easily see it.
4. General Event Related Policies.
A. The driver is the official entry. He / She can
switch karts between heats or before the feature, but not during a race.
The kart must comply with the minimum weight for that particular kart and
display the number with which the driver registered.
B. All host track rules and regulations will be adhered
to by drivers in the Florida All-Stars. The show will be run according to
their normal procedures unless the promoter decides to modify those procedures
to improve the event.
C. The promoter has the right to refuse any equipment
for competition on their track that they feel is unsafe for competition.
1) Wolf Plates or equivalent will be required on brake rotors mounted behind
seats.
2) No Mini-lite brake rotors will be allowed with the exception of the the large
vented (Dbl) rotor.
All other safety requirements of the track and/or promoter will be strictly
enforced.
D. The promoter is solely responsible for running the
show. The FAS will provide competitors and post-race
technical inspection .
E. The promoter is to provide documents that list
the feature race final finish, the heat winners, and those competitors who
were in any consolation races. This information is necessary for
calculation of points and event write-ups.
F. It is requested that promoters only permit a driver
to spin out two times per heat race or feature race. Those drivers should
be black flagged upon their third spin out.
G. Wedge body work shall be no higher than 30"
measured from the ground with kart sitting on the ground.
H. This program is intended for vehicles classified as
go-karts. The go-karts are to be constructed in a safe manner. Maximum
overall dimensions will be determined by the least restrictive parameters for
any division as generally set forth by IKF, WKA, KART and CIK.
5) PROTEST PROCEDURES
1. Motor may be protested for $75.00
a. $50.00 is used for
professional inspection.
b. $25.00 is used for
gasket kit (if motor is legal)
c. If motor is illegal,
protestor will be reimbursed up to $75.00
d. Motor may be held up
to 5 days for inspection.
e. Drivers of CLASS
are the only persons eligible for protest.
2. Illegal motors will be imposed a
fine.
a. First offense: $75.00
for professional inspection. Loss of points and earnings that night.
b. Second offense:
200.00 fine loss of points and earnings for that night.
c. Third offense: Kart
and driver suspended for 2 weeks.
* IF A KART IS FOUND TO BE
ILLEGAL, THE DRIVER WILL LOSE ALL POINTS FOR THAT RACE AND WILL NOT
BE ALLOWED TO UTILIZE THE "DROP LOWEST POINTS" RULE!!!!
* ALL PROTESTS MUST COME FROM A
REGISTERED TEAM FROM THE SAME CLASS!!!!
* ALL DETERMINATION(S) MADE BY TRACK
TECH OFFICIALS WILL BE FINAL!!! NO DISCUSSION!!!!
Note
to Competitors
The FAS is intended to be a Professional series and all drivers and
crew members are expected to act accordingly. If you can’t or won’t
drive and act in a professional manner, then race in another division. We
don’t necessarily want the most drivers, but we do want the best. Please
give your competitors room to race. Respect the other drivers, they have a
lot invested too. Rough driving, foul language, and un-sports-man-like
conduct are not tolerated. Officials are requested to be especially firm
with the FAS drivers and crew members.. Remember, a lot of kids look up to YOU.
Spirit
and Intent
The FAS was created to preserve and promote open class kart
racing. Innovation is allowed and encouraged. These rules were
created to provide parameters for the purpose of safety, cost containment,
and consistency from track to track and region to region. Generally
speaking, if a rule does not specifically state that something is not permitted,
then it can be assumed that it is permitted. Series administrators are
personally involved with the series/circuit in their region and will monitor the
effect of new technology as it is created. Any rule adjustments that
become necessary to maintain a level playing field due to the introduction of
new technology will go into effect the following year.
